Ex/Mt $65 1939 Goldsmith Scorebook from Portland Oregon City League. Superb 120 page spiral bound scorebook with the 1939 season filling about a quarter of the score book. The season begins in May and extends through August. The teams include Pointer-Willamette, Oregon Electric, Willamette Hyster, Commercial Iron, Beaverton, Southeast Fuel, Wool of the West, Blue Flame Gas Co, Lipman Wolfe etc.. The home team is Pointer Willamette. Has a couple of pages of baseball equipment ad's. A wonderful scorebook. If someone took the time to go to a Portland library they could find all these games on micro film in the Portland Newspapers. Very nice condition. Ex/Mt $75 1939 All Star Game Program. At Yankee Stadium. One of the greatest and most important of all All-Star games. 1939 marked the closing of Lou Gehrig's career. He was appointed the captain of the American League team even though he could not play, made even more poignant because the game was played at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio ended up hitting the games only home run capping a 3-1 American League win. Nicely scored. The program is in outstanding condition with a perfect spine, no tears and no signifigant creases other than an extremely light vertical center fold. Ex/Mt $595 1940 Philadelphia A's vs New York Yankees Program, Appears to be from opening day. First number is printed on the cover and the A's opened the season against the Yankees. Scored for 5 1/2 innings, possibly a rain shortened game. Roy Johnson hit a home run. Has small stain on the front cover, otherwise great condition. The Dodgers have Joe Medwick, Billy Herman, Pete Reiser, Dolph Camilli, Arky Vaughn & Pee Wee Reese and are defending National League champions (for the first time since 1920). The Cubs have Stan Hack, Phil Cavaretta, Bill Lee, Claude Passeau, Johnny Schmitz etc.. The cover's spine has been professionally repaired with archival quality acid free tape and is loose at the staples. Spectacular condition otherwise. Has nice page devoted to the Yankees serving in WW2 including DiMaggio, Selkirk, Ruffing, Henrich, Rizutto etc.. Ex+ $30 1982 World Series Program Autographed by Harvey Kuenn. Harvey's Wallbangers (Milwaukee Brewers) make it to the World Series for the only time in franchise history but lose in 7 games to the St. Louis Cardinals. This unscored program is in beautiful condition and is autographed on the cover by Harvey Kuenn who in my opinion should be a Hall of Famer as one of the greatest hitting shortstops in history. He led the American League in hits 3 of his first 4 seasons and led all shortstops in fielding his fourth season. He was converted to the outfield in 1958 and has a career batting average of .303. Because of health problems Kuenn managed for only 2 seasons, he followed up this World Series year with a 87-75 record in 1983 and then never managed again. Comes with certificate of authenticity. It is signed on the cover by Joe Hill and finally a 1951 "Batting Averages at a Glance" book by the Sporting News which allowed broadcasters to figure batting average instantly. Joe Hill was the baseball announcer of the Rochester Red Wings during the 1930's-50's. These two publications were both used by Joe Hill and are both autographed on the cover by him. Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. 1941 was Brooklyn's first World Series appearance since 1916 and game 2 was Brooklyn's only win as Whit Wyatt beat the Yankees Spud Chandler 3-2. Four of the five games were pitchers duels and in game 3 pitcher Marius Russo hit a ball off of Freddie Fitzsimmon's kneecap. Pee Wee Reese caught the ricochet for the final out of the 7th inning and preserved a scoreless tie but the line drive broke Fitzsimmons kneecap and his replacement gave up 2 runs and the Dodgers lost game three 2-1. Game four is known for Mickey Owen's boner as the Dodgers blew a 5-4 ninth inning lead and in game 5 the Yankees Tiny Bonham outdueled Whit Wyatt 3-1 to close out the series four games to one. This ticket is in very nice condition. It's large (2 1/4" x 4"). It has one tiny pin hole and has no creases.
